Canvassing software
Canvassing software is a tool that helps door-to-door and field sales teams plan territories, record a result at every address they visit, and see what's actually been covered, instead of relying on paper knock sheets or a shared spreadsheet.
What it actually does
At its core, canvassing software does three things. It splits a wider area into patches and assigns each one to a named rep, so two people don't end up working the same street. It gives reps a working list of addresses, the knocksheet, where they record a result at each door. And it rolls those results up into reporting a manager can read without rebuilding a spreadsheet every week.
Good canvassing software also loads useful data against each address before anyone knocks. For a UK team that might be EPC rating, wall type, built form, or whether solar is already fitted. That turns a blind knock into an informed one.
How it's different from a CRM
A CRM manages a deal once it exists: stages, notes, follow-ups. Canvassing software runs the part before that, the doorstep itself: who's covering which street, what happened at each address, and whether the patch has actually been worked. Most field teams end up using both. The canvassing software runs the knock, then hands a sign-up into a pipeline for the rest of the sales process.
What to look for
The features that actually matter for a field team: territory assignment by postcode or area, so ownership is clear before anyone leaves the office; a fixed set of result options at the door rather than free text, so the numbers mean something later; a timestamp and location on each result, so coverage is checkable rather than taken on trust; and reporting that's ready the moment the day's knocking is done.
